Subnautica 2 Guide: How to Find and Farm Salt

Power Up Your Vehicles: Where to Secure Early-Game Salt and Outrun the Heat

Quick Answer: For a quick early-game haul, swim 232 meters Southeast of your Lifepod to the Blackbox, Chap cave system at a depth of 40 meters. If you need to stockpile massive quantities, trek 500 meters Southeast to the Dead Coral Biome, where bleached coral structures are covered in Salt deposits.

Surviving the ocean depths of Zazura requires more than just managing your oxygen tank. Pretty quickly, you will run into a progression wall that requires a steady supply of Salt. This mineral is a mandatory ingredient for food preservation and, more importantly, crafting Power Cell technology.

Without Power Cells, you cannot build vehicles like the Tadpole or power advanced machinery. While Salt isn’t sitting directly beneath your Lifepod, you can grab it early if you know which directions to swim.

Why Salt is Crucial for Progression

You might think Salt is just for seasoning alien fish, but it actually serves as a foundational building block for your mid-game tech tree.

  • Power Cell Manufacturing: Salt is a core requirement for battery and Power Cell blueprints.
  • Vehicle Crafting: You cannot assemble vehicles or high-tier exploration tools without those Power Cells.
  • Food Preservation: Curing raw fish with Salt stops them from rotting in your storage lockers.

Since you will be hunting down multiple resources to get your electronics online, it pays to plan your routes efficiently. If you are still struggling to find the electrical components needed to wire your base machines, take a look at our comprehensive Subnautica 2 Guide: Where to Find and Farm Copper to stock up on basic materials.

Location 1: The Blackbox – Chap Cave (Early Game)

If you are still in the early hours of the game and do not want to swim halfway across the map, there is a hidden pocket of Salt relatively close to home.

To find this stash, drop below your Lifepod and align your compass perfectly Southeast. Swim straight for roughly 200 meters until the seabed transitions into a distinct rust-colored terrain covered in orange-brown algae.

Look around for a unique cave formation featuring a tall, thin rock spire that reaches all the way up to the ocean surface. Right near a clearing where a large Coral Crab is hibernating, you will find a cave opening. Dive inside to a depth of 40 meters, and you can harvest several Salt crystals right off the cave walls.

Location 2: The Dead Coral Biome (Best Farming Spot)

When you reach the point where you need to farm Salt in bulk, the starter cave will not cut it. You need to head out to the Dead Coral Biome. This area is located 500 meters Southeast of the Lifepod, resting just past the volatile lava region.

Navigating Around the Lava Biome

You do not need to unlock the Heat Tolerance Adaptation to reach this biome. You can easily skirt around the danger zone by following these steps:

  1. Swim directly Southeast from your Lifepod in a straight line.
  2. At around 350 meters, the water temperature will spike, and an orange fog will appear, signaling the edge of the lava biome.
  3. Hug the outer edge of this orange fog, keeping your character in the cool water zones.
  4. As soon as the orange fog fades away, turn your compass directly East.

Harvesting the Bleached Domes

You will immediately cross over into a bleak landscape filled with calcified, bone-white coral structures half-buried in the sand.

Every single white coral dome in this biome is absolute prime real estate for resources. You will find dozens of Salt deposits clinging to the white shells. Just swim up and pick them off by hand. While Salt does spawn inside the actual lava biome as well, it is scattered too far apart to be worth the hazard. Stick to the Dead Coral Biome for the fastest farming loops.
