Tomodachi Life: Complete Friendship & Mii Guide

A complete breakdown of how to import your favorite characters, trigger crushes, and keep everyone from falling into a massive slump.

Making Your Islanders

Mii creation is basically the heart of the entire game. If you do not care about the people on your island, the social simulation aspect gets boring incredibly fast. You can either use the guided setup or build them entirely from scratch.

The absolute best new feature here is the face paint tool. Instead of just layering standard presets like we did in Miitopia, you can draw directly onto a Mii’s face or use a bunch of stamps to add realistic scars, cute freckles, or completely unhinged cartoon markings.

Beyond looks, every single Mii needs a few core traits set up before they move in:

  • Personality Type: This directly dictates who they naturally vibe with and how they handle problems around the island.
  • Voice: You can adjust the pitch, speed, and tone so they sound exactly how you want.
  • Birthday & Favorite Color: Small details that add to their unique identity.
  • Catchphrase: A personal line they will randomly drop during conversations.

Do not just speed through these settings! If you are struggling to get the exact personality you want, I highly recommend checking out my guide on unlocking all sixteen Mii personality types so you are not just blindly messing with the sliders.

How to Import from Miitopia

Sharing Miis directly online in Living the Dream is locked down, probably because the voice synthesis lets them say practically anything. But there is a sneaky workaround using the free Miitopia demo.

  1. Open the Miitopia demo and use an Access Key to download the Mii you want.
  2. Choose the option to copy that Mii directly to your Nintendo Switch console system.
  3. Open Tomodachi Life, add a new resident, and select the option to create a Mii from your console.

Just a quick warning: Any specific Miitopia makeup details will totally vanish during the transfer. You will have to use the new face paint tools to redraw those missing details yourself.

Friendships, Drama, and Romance

This is the part that confuses a lot of new players. One of my favorite changes is that you can manually introduce people now. You just drag one Mii over to another to get them talking. If they have compatible personalities, their friendship meter goes up. If their personalities clash, they might never get along. Just let the drama unfold naturally and do not force pairings that constantly fail.

When it comes to romance, you do not strictly need a third wheel on the island, but having only two Miis really slows down the mechanics. Having more people around creates jealousy, social triangles, and pressure, which sparks crushes much more organically.

Once someone catches feelings, you get a massively dramatic confession scene. If it goes well, they start dating and can eventually get married, share a house, and even have kids. If they get rejected, they fall into a massive slump and you have to cheer them up. Oh, and absolutely do not click the yellow bubble after a dream sequence unless you are ready to lock in a relationship status you might not have intended.

What Else is New? (The Big Upgrades)

This game is definitely not just a shiny port. Nintendo added some massive quality-of-life changes and new features that make the island feel so much more alive. Here is a quick breakdown of what changed from the original 3DS game:

Keeping Your Island Happy

Happiness is the main engine of this game. Happy Miis level up and give you cool rewards, while miserable ones drag down the whole island’s vibe. To keep things running smoothly, you need to focus on a few daily tasks:

  • Food: Pay attention to their reactions. Give them foods they love and avoid the ones that make them gag.
  • Clothing: Whenever they request a new outfit, hand them something that matches their vibe for a massive happiness boost.
  • Problem Solving: Look out for speech bubbles. You will need to step in to fix everything from low energy to full-blown relationship conflicts.
  • Social Time: Set up interactions between Miis who are already friends to maintain their social satisfaction.

You really do not need to play this game for hours at a time. Short, ten-minute daily check-ins are the best way to keep your town alive. Take your time, build up your island slowly, and enjoy the absolute chaos of your own personalized dollhouse.
