Outbound Guide: How to Leave the First Area and Reach the Second Map

Craft the Level 2 Pickaxe and Smash Through the Mossrock Barrier

Quick Answer: To escape the starting biome, you must destroy the Mossrocks blocking the northeast tunnel. Doing this requires crafting a Level 2 Pickaxe using 3 Reinforced Planks, 3 Silverbark Planks, and 2 Thread. Once the rubble is cleared, you can drive your RV straight through to the new coastal map!

You have probably spent hours turning your starter camper van into a rolling fortress. The opening biome in Outbound is massive and packed with blueprints, resources, and upgrades to discover. Eventually, though, you will exhaust the local supply of secrets. When you finally decide to hit the road and see what else the world has to offer, the game throws a massive roadblock in your way.

Leaving the first area is not as simple as following the highway. You have to craft specific gear to clear the path. Here is exactly how to break through the barrier and reach the second map.

The Mossrock Roadblock

If you look at your map, you will spot a road leading out of the northeast corner. The map icon looks like a semi-circle with an arrow pointing right. Drive up there, and you will find the tunnel completely buried under a massive pile of rubble.

These are Mossrocks. Your starter tools will simply bounce right off them. To clear the debris, you absolutely must craft the Level 2 Pickaxe.

How to Craft the Level 2 Pickaxe

Upgrading your pickaxe requires a handful of refined materials that take some effort to gather. First, make sure you actually have the blueprint. The Blueprint Pickaxe II schematic will naturally pop up at one of the signal towers towards the end of your time in the starting zone. Make sure you select it when given the option!

Once you have the recipe, you need to gather three specific components:

Required ItemQuantity Needed
Reinforced Planks3
Silverbark Planks3
Thread2

Forging Reinforced Planks

This is the most complicated part of the process. You build Reinforced Planks at the Nailing Station by combining two Everwood Planks with one Metal.

To get three Reinforced Planks, you need to do some math and farming:

  • Gather 12 Everwood Logs and process them in your Sawmill to get 6 Everwood Planks.
  • Gather 6 Scrap Metal and smelt them in your Metal Smelter to get 3 Metal.

Building a Metal Smelter requires Coarse Ore, which is notoriously difficult to locate. If you are struggling to find this rare material, check out our Coarse Ore location guide to pinpoint the exact mining spot.

Harvesting Silverbark Planks

You cannot use standard wood for this upgrade. You need Silverbark Logs. Drive over to the eastern or northeastern sections of the map, specifically around the vehicle ramp or the bridge leading to the farm. Look for trees with distinct, shiny silver bark. Chop them down and run the logs through your Sawmill to produce your three Silverbark Planks.

Spinning Thread

Thread is incredibly easy to make compared to the planks. You just need a Spinning Wheel, which costs 10 Fiber to build. Once the machine is placed in your van, toss in 4 Fiber. The machine converts two Fiber into one Thread, leaving you with the exact amount you need for your new pickaxe.

Breaking Through to the Coast

With your 3 Reinforced Planks, 3 Silverbark Planks, and 2 Thread ready to go, craft the Level 2 Pickaxe at your workbench.

Drive back up to the blocked tunnel in the northeast. Walk up to the Mossrocks, pull out your shiny new tool, and smash the boulders to dust. Jump back into the driver’s seat, hit the gas, and drive straight through the cleared tunnel. You will instantly transition into the second biome. Enjoy the fresh ocean breeze on the coast!
