Moonlight Peaks Guide: How to Upgrade Your Tools

Staring at a massive boulder blocking your perfect farm layout is incredibly frustrating. When you first move into Moonlight Peaks, your standard set of tools is pretty weak. That rusty old pickaxe and dull axe simply cannot break the large rocks and massive tree stumps cluttering your property.

If you want to clear out space for multiple barns, sprawling crop fields, and advanced processing machines, you absolutely need to upgrade your gear. The game kind of hides this mechanic, so here is exactly how to ditch your starter tools.

Unlocking the Tool Shop

You are stuck with your default equipment for the first chunk of the game. Ridge will not even offer you tool upgrades until you complete a specific story milestone.

Focus entirely on finishing the A Bridge Too Far quest. Completing this objective repairs the broken bridge and grants you full access to the Misty Shores region. Once that bridge is fixed, the upgrade path officially opens up.

Head into town and walk into The Broken Hammer. Speak to Ridge to open his store inventory. The game defaults to his standard building supplies, so you need to click over to the third tab in his shop menu to actually see the tool upgrades.

Upgrade Costs and Requirements

Upgrading your gear is a step-by-step process. You cannot skip straight to the best equipment. You have to upgrade your base tool to Copper, then take that Copper tool and turn it into Iron, and finally upgrade the Iron version to Gold.

Note: The fishing rod operates on a slightly different system. Once you unlock the Gold upgrade tier for your other tools, you can upgrade your base fishing rod directly to the Gold version using 3 Gold Bars and 16,000 coins.

Gathering the Materials

Finding the actual metal for your first upgrades is incredibly easy once you finish the bridge quest. Walk across the newly opened path into Misty Shores and head straight to the lower-left corner of the map.

You will stumble across the Cave of Echoes. Walk inside, whip out your starter pickaxe, and start smashing all the copper nodes. Smelt those down into Copper Bars, and you will have the raw materials covered in no time.

Funding Your New Gear

The real bottleneck here is cash. Upgrading all five of your main tools to Copper costs 5,000 coins total. That is a massive chunk of change in the early game when you are constantly reinvesting your profits into new seeds, barns, and wells.

If you are broke, you need a lazy money-making strategy.

• Grow Wily Wheat: Plant a massive field of wheat, harvest it, and throw it straight into your kegs to brew Beer. This is easily one of the fastest ways to print money early on.
• Invest in Regrowable Crops: Plant crops that yield multiple harvests without needing replanted. This completely eliminates the recurring cost of buying fresh seeds every few days, leaving more pure profit in your wallet for Ridge.

Do whatever it takes to secure the Iron Pickaxe as fast as humanly possible. Breaking those massive rocks on your farm is the biggest hurdle to expanding your layout, and the Iron tier is exactly what you need to smash them to dust.
