Marathon Guide: Dominating the Season 2 Cradle Upgrade System

Stop losing your hard-earned stats and start building the ultimate Runner with our complete breakdown of Season 2's permanent progression system.

Quick Answer: Season 2 introduces the Cradle, a persistent and fully refundable skill tree that applies across all your Shells. Stop spreading your points thinly, dump your first upgrades into the Endurance and Dexterity trees to boost your survival, stamina, and looting speed before experimenting with specialized builds.

Grinding out Faction rank in the first season of Marathon was a miserable experience. Tying core progression to flawless extractions led to massive burnout, especially when a bad run wiped out your hard work.

Thankfully, that brutal system is dead. Season 2 replaces it with the Cradle. This entirely new upgrade tree respects your time, lets you experiment freely, and carries your progression through seasonal resets. Any upgrades you lock in apply universally to every Shell you own. Plus, if you hate your current loadout, you can wipe the board and reallocate your energy at zero cost. Just navigate to your Shells menu and hit “Access Cradle” to get started.

Leveling Fast: Farming Cradle XP

Before you start theorycrafting a god-tier loadout, you need currency. Unlocking perks requires Energy. You get one Energy point every time you level up your Cradle, which takes exactly 1,000 XP.

Here are the two best ways to farm that XP efficiently:

  • Grind Any Contract: The game no longer cares which faction you represent. Completing absolutely any contract funnels raw XP straight into your progression pool.
  • Vaporize Your Junk: Got a Vault full of useless clutter? Use the Matter Converter. Highlighting junk and hitting “Convert Matter” deletes the item but immediately grants you XP. It is the absolute fastest way to level up without risking your life in a hot zone.

If you are tired of getting sniped by sweaty squads while trying to farm objectives, you should absolutely adjust your matchmaking settings.

The Complete Cradle Upgrade Tree

Maxing out the entire board takes 84 levels. The tree is split into six main categories, each offering passive base stat bumps alongside specific, high-impact perks.

The Best Early Game Upgrades

Do not treat your skill points like peanut butter. Spreading them evenly across all six trees is a massive mistake. You need to pick a lane and commit to deep unlocks.

Your absolute first priority should be Endurance. Marathon rewards positioning above everything else. Having a larger heat capacity dictates whether you can outrun a bad gunfight or sprint fast enough to secure premium loot. Grab the Quick Vent perk immediately. It only costs 3 Energy and heavily reduces the time you spend gasping for breath.

Once your stamina economy is under control, dump your next points into Dexterity. The movement buffs are fantastic, but the real secret weapon here is the looting speed. Ripping through chests faster means spending less time standing still as easy sniper bait.

Tailoring the Endgame to Your Playstyle

Because you can respec for free, you are never locked into a bad decision. Once you bank a solid amount of Energy, start building specifically around the Runner shell you enjoy using most.

Heavy, armor-focused players should dive straight into the Resistance tree. Grabbing the TCIV Resist perk turns you into a walking tank in hazard zones. Just remember the golden rule of the Cradle: specialized passive perks always outperform microscopic bumps to your base stats. Rush the deep nodes, test the build in the field, and if it plays terribly, refund your points and try something new.
