Palia Guide: How to Unlock, Ride, and Breed Mounts

Hit the Trails: Your Complete Guide to Palia's Mount System

Quick Answer: Head to the Royal Highlands and locate quadrant I6 near Lonely Glen. Smash the amber trapping the horse with your pickaxe, feed it three Dawnspur Lilies, and equip the saddle from your tool menu to start riding.

Palia boasts a gorgeous, sprawling map. Walking across those massive regions on foot is a great way to take in the scenery, but it gets old fast when you need to bounce between zones. Getting your hands on a horse changes everything.

We are going to walk you through exactly where to find your very first mount. Plus, we will cover the ins and outs of the ranching system so you can fill your stables with beautiful horses.

Finding Your First Horse

You do not need to wait for a specific point in the main story to get your mount. As soon as you can reach the Royal Highlands, you are good to go.

Here is the exact step by step process to rescue your new ride:

  1. Travel to the Royal Highlands and head toward Lochland Dock.
  2. Follow the path leading down to the Lonely Glen.
  3. Check your map and pinpoint the top left corner of quadrant I6.
  4. Look for Hassian, who is hanging out next to a horse completely encased in amber.
  5. Pull out your pickaxe and crack the amber open to free the animal.
  6. Forage the immediate area for three golden Dawnspur Lilies.
  7. Hand the flowers over to the horse to energize it.

Hassian will challenge you to hop on. Open your inventory, navigate to the tool menu, select the saddle icon, and assign your new mount.

Mastering the Reins

With your saddle equipped, exit the menus and pull up your standard tool wheel. Your mount sits right at the bottom alongside your axe and fishing rod. Select it, and your steed will appear right beneath you in a puff of smoke.

Riding is straightforward, but you need to manage your stamina if you want to maintain top speed on long journeys.

Riding MechanicHow It Works

Speed UpHold down the forward movement key.
Slow DownTap the backward movement key to gradually reduce speed.
Stop InstantlyHold down the backward movement key to slam on the brakes.
Stamina ManagementSteer into the glowing gold orbs scattered along the roads to instantly restore your stamina bar.

The Breeding Process

Once you secure your first horse, it lives at your barn. Running out of stable space means you have to shuffle older horses into the retirement section to make room for new arrivals.

Leveling up your ranching skill unlocks the ability to breed different types of horses. The system lets you mix and match specific traits to create the perfect mount, but there is one hard rule: absolutely no crossbreeding between species.

  • A Dawnspur can only breed with another Dawnspur.
  • Phoenixfire mounts only pair with other Phoenixfire mounts.
  • Akwindu horses exclusively breed with Akwindu horses.

Do You Have to Pay Real Money?

You can ride your standard Dawnspur completely free of charge. You just need to knock out Binnie’s questline in the Royal Highlands to unlock full access.

The exotic breeds are a different story. Taking a Phoenixfire or Akwindu out for a spin requires a special riding license. These licenses cost Palia Coins, which are bought with real money. You need a totally separate license for each exotic breed type.

The good news? The game still lets you breed these premium horses without a license. You can spend your time breeding the absolute perfect flaming Phoenixfire mount and wait to buy the license until you actually want to ride it.
