Windrose Guide: How to Complete Eyes Wide With Fear Quest
Unearth the Madman's Chest and survive the deadly Drowned ambush with our complete quest walkthrough.

Quick Answer: Craft a Shovel before you leave base, find the Diary Fragments to update your map, and dig in the exact center of the skeleton cluster at the blue marker. Draw your weapon immediately after unearthing the Madman’s Chest, a brutal Drowned ambush triggers the moment you open it.
The Eyes Wide With Fear quest hands you a ripped diary page, vaguely promises buried treasure, and leaves you to figure out the rest. There is no giant red X on your map. Since Windrose uses procedural generation to shuffle island layouts around, you cannot just look up a map grid coordinate, either.
Thankfully, the actual structure of the quest is identical every single time you play. Follow these steps, and you will have the Madman’s Chest popped open without wasting twenty minutes digging up random patches of dirt.
Prep Work: Don’t Leave Home Without a Shovel
You absolutely need a Shovel for this quest. The Madman’s Chest is buried underground, and arriving at the quest marker empty-handed just means an annoying trip all the way back to your base.
Here is what you need to craft a Shovel at your Workbench:
- 3 Copper Ingots
- 10 Wood
Getting those ingots means you must already have a Pickaxe, a Kiln, and a Smelting Furnace set up. Knock out this basic infrastructure early. While this mission doesn’t throw you into intense naval blockades like the Needle in a Haystack quest does, showing up unprepared will still get you killed.

Starting the Quest & Finding the Clues
The hunt kicks off when you find a survivor’s old chest on the island. Looting it gives you a set of Diary Fragments.
Open your Journal and actually read the fragments. Doing this updates your quest log and drops a shiny blue marker on your map. This marker points to the general vicinity of the real prize: the Madman’s Chest, which is buried somewhere on that exact same island.
Locating the Madman’s Chest Dig Site
Head straight to the new blue map marker. You are looking for an area nestled between several massive trees, littered with scattered skeletal remains.
Do not start mashing the dig button aimlessly. Walk slowly toward the very center of the skeleton pile and watch the ground texture closely. You will see a distinct sparkle effect radiating from the dirt. That sparkle is your guaranteed dig spot.
The Digging Process
- Equip your Shovel.
- Cycle the tool into Dig mode. If it is stuck in Weapon mode, you will just blindly swing at the air.
- Stand directly over the ground sparkles.
- Activate the dig prompt to pull the old chest out of the dirt.
- Back away and draw your weapon immediately. Do not loot it yet!
Survive the Drowned Ambush
Here is the trap the game does not warn you about. The second you interact with the surfaced chest, a massive Drowned ambush triggers. Multiple enemies spawn out of thin air and swarm you.
These are not standard tutorial enemies. They hit incredibly hard and will punish you if you skipped upgrading your gear. Trying to blindly click and loot the chest while they are attacking is a guaranteed death sentence.
Pro Tip: Bring at least 4 to 5 Healing Potions with you. If you have the materials, craft Great Healing Potions instead. Make sure your Copper Axe is fully upgraded before triggering this fight. Wipe out the entire Drowned squad before you even think about claiming your loot.
What Are the Quest Rewards?
Depending on your current game version and difficulty settings, the loot inside the Madman’s Chest varies slightly. Based on community tracking, you can expect one of these two reward pools:
| Reward Pool | Guaranteed Loot Drops |
| Pool A | 5x Guinea, 4x Silver Ingot |
| Pool B | 10x Guinea, 1x Tumbaga Ingot, 1x List of Essentials, 100 XP |
Both reward pools are highly valuable for early-game progression. The Silver and Tumbaga Ingots will save you serious grinding time at the furnace.
