Windrose Guide: How to Complete The Bitter Pill Quest

A complete walkthrough to uncovering the governor's traitor, boarding the Grim Reaper, and claiming your rewards.

Quick Answer: Unlock “The Bitter Pill” by talking to Doctor Galen after the main quest “I Need a Bigger Boat.” You’ll need to infiltrate Richards’ Camp, find incriminating letters and gunpowder, and eventually confront Francois Arnaud on Tortuga before boarding the Grim Reaper ship.

The Bitter Pill is a gripping side quest that exposes a high-level traitor within the Governor’s inner circle. While the recommended level is 9, skilled players can jump in earlier if they are ready for some intense naval and ground combat. Because this quest overlaps significantly with the “Revenge is Best Served Cold” main mission, I highly recommend running them simultaneously to save yourself a lot of back-and-forth sailing.

If you thought the skirmish at Richards’ Camp was intense, just wait until you venture into the murky bogs of the eastern map. When you are finally ready to face off against one of the game’s most notoriously frustrating encounters, check out my full Windrose guide on how to beat the Swamp Monster so you don’t end up as gator bait.

How to Infiltrate Richards’ Camp

To get inside the camp, you first need to play a bit of hide-and-seek in the Coastal Jungle. This area is heavily guarded, so keep your eyes peeled.

  • Collect four Black Marks hidden in chests throughout the Coastal Jungle.
  • Watch out for Blackbeard Gunboats during the transit; they love to ambush players in the narrow channels.
  • Once you have all four marks, sail southwest to the camp entrance.
  • Interact with the Hideout Entrance and select “Show Black Marks” to pass.

Be careful: the moment you step through the inner doors, you are locked into a boss fight with Thomas Richards. Ensure your health is topped off and your best gear is equipped before you interact with that final door.

Finding the Evidence and the Gunpowder

Once Thomas Richards is dealt with, the real detective work begins. You aren’t just here for the fight; you’re here for the paper trail.

Search the chests in the room behind the boss to find Francois Arnaud’s Letter. This note is addressed to Blackbeard himself and serves as the primary evidence of treason. Take this back to Doctor Galen immediately.

Galen won’t move on a whim, though. He needs physical proof. Head southwest to the Blackbeard Ruins Excavation Site. You’ll find the Gunpowder Crates tucked away in the northwest corner near a steel cage. Look for the Arnaud Trading Company insignia—that’s the “smoking gun” Galen needs to authorize the next move.

The Confrontation on Tortuga

With the evidence secured, sail southeast to the bustling port of Tortuga. You’ll find Francois Arnaud standing just to the right of the first intersection after you dock.

During the confrontation, the plot thickens. Francois isn’t just a traitor for profit; his son Jacques has been kidnapped by Edward Teach (the infamous Blackbeard). To progress, you’ll have to agree to rescue the boy from the pirate ship, the Grim Reaper, which is currently anchored just off the coast of Tortuga.

Boarding the Grim Reaper

The battle with the Grim Reaper is a standard naval engagement, but don’t get overconfident. The ship is flanked by two Blackbeard Raider escorts that will pepper you with fire if you focus solely on the main target.

  • Writhe down the Grim Reaper’s health until the boarding prompt appears.
  • Once aboard, fight your way to the lower deck.
  • Locate Jacques Arnaud to trigger the final narrative twist.

Jacques reveals a dark truth: he wasn’t a victim. He staged the kidnapping to win Blackbeard’s favor and ruin his father. Unfortunately, Jacques’ story ends here regardless of what you say; his wounds are fatal, and the outcome is scripted.

Rewards and Final Choices

Return to the Tortuga port and break the news to Francois. You can choose to be blunt about his son’s betrayal or spare his feelings by saying he died a captive. Interestingly, this choice is purely for roleplay—the rewards remain the same.

After the talk, head to the tavern across the street to meet Doctor Galen and wrap things up.
