Starting your journey in Outbound can feel incredibly claustrophobic. The promotional trailers show off these massive, multi-level rolling fortresses packed with furniture, but you kick off your adventure with barely enough room for a bed. Trying to squeeze all your shiny new workstations into that tiny starter space is a nightmare.
You need to expand upwards. Unlocking the ability to build a second story for your van is a massive game changer, and you can actually get it done surprisingly early. Here is exactly how to secure the blueprint and start constructing your upper deck.
Tracking Down the Building Blueprint
To get your expansion started, you need to leave your cramped van behind and hike north. Your destination is the Treehut landmark. If you are looking at your map in the opening section of the game, find the Fire Lookout tower and head straight north. The Treehut is the westernmost landmark in that northern cluster, sitting directly opposite the Windmill.

Solving the Treehut Terminal Puzzle
When you arrive at the Treehut, you cannot just grab the blueprint and leave. The main PC is locked down, and you need to scavenge the immediate area for three specific items to bypass the security.
Here is exactly where to find all three override components:

| Signal Decryptor | Check the shelves sitting directly across the room from the main PC terminal. |
| Password Databank | Walk out of the PC room, turn right, and climb the ladder. Look for a table next to the fungi display cases. |
| Terminal Executable | Find the ladder on the opposite side of the PC room and climb up. The item is resting on a table between two chairs. |
Once you have grabbed all three components, simply interact with the main terminal to successfully download the Building blueprint.
Constructing Your Upper Deck
With the schematic secured, head all the way back to your camper van. Walk over to the rear window section and open it up to access your main workbench. You will now see the option to craft the Base Building Deck vehicle upgrade.
Make sure you have the following materials in your inventory:
- 10 Everwood
- 3 Scrap Metal
Crafting this upgrade instantly spawns a hatch in the ceiling of your van, complete with a ladder leading up to a fresh wooden deck.
Expanding Your New Floor
Keep in mind that the Base Building Deck only gives you the bare foundation. You are completely exposed to the elements up there. You will need to dive into your build menu and manually place down flooring, walls, and a roof to fully enclose your new room.
This process requires a massive stockpile of wood and processed planks, so keep chopping those trees. The best part? Once you finish enclosing your new second story, you can slap another roof on it, build another ladder, and keep expanding your mobile base even higher into the sky!
