Yoshi and the Mysterious Book Guide: Complete Mountaintops Walkthrough

Master the Mountaintops: All 26 Smiley Flowers and Creature Discoveries Explained

Quick Answer: The Mountaintops chapter requires 20 Discovery Stars to unlock and introduces six unique creatures across distinct habitats. You will need to master their specific mechanics, from bouncing on Mildes to hitching rides on Flooflies, to track down all 26 hidden Smiley Flowers.

Ascending the Mountaintops

Leaving behind the quiet foliage of the Wildwoods, Chapter 2 of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book takes things to a much higher altitude. The Mountaintops chapter is packed with vertical platforming, underground tunnels, and even a volcanic crater.

Before you can tackle these peaks, you need to unlock the area by collecting 20 Stars. You earn these strictly through making Discoveries. If your Star count is a little low, jump back into a previous chapter and experiment with your environment. Progression alone won’t cut it. You have to poke around, interact with the wildlife, and uncover secrets.

Creature Breakdown & Habitats

This chapter features six distinct creatures. Mr. E provides their default names, but you get the chance to rename them once you uncover the Big Discovery in each respective habitat. Here is what to expect on your climb:

Taggit Habitat Walkthrough

Taggits are incredibly quick and love snatching items. The entire habitat revolves around catching these little thieves and tossing them to retrieve stolen goods or trigger switches out of your reach.

Catching All 5 Taggits

Clearing this habitat requires you to track down and catch five specific Taggits. Follow these steps to snag them all:

  1. Equip your Magnifying Glass and inspect the creature wandering in the grass patch to kick things off.
  2. Chase the first Taggit to the right. Collect the tokens it drops along the way, but watch your step around the ground tunnel so you don’t fall in prematurely.
  3. Scale the platforms and continue right to corner and catch the second Taggit.
  4. Aim a Taggit upward to fetch the first Smiley Flower out of its basket. Catch the Taggit as it falls back down to secure the flower.
  5. Hop across the vines heading leftward to discover and grab the third Taggit.
  6. Drop down into the underground tunnel. Run to the very end to find the fourth Taggit balancing precariously on a nut.
  7. Toss two Taggits at the leafy ceiling above to knock down the heart turnip.
  8. Carry the turnip to the Croakaoke. Feeding it opens up a tight tunnel that hides the second Smiley Flower.
  9. Ride the balloon plants upward. While floating, launch a Taggit at the pile of leaves on the right wall to uncover the third Smiley Flower.
  10. At the very peak of the stage, fire an egg into the orange leaves to flush out the fifth Taggit.
  11. Finally, leap into the sparkling Big Discovery spot to clear the habitat.

Taggit Smiley Flowers

  • Flower 1: Located in a basket hovering over the waterfall. Hurl a Taggit at it, then catch the creature to add the flower to your collection.
  • Flower 2: Grab the heart turnip by throwing a Taggit at the ceiling root near the upper right platform. Feed this turnip to the underground Croakaoke to reveal the flower.
  • Flower 3: Grab the red balloon on the far right side to float to the top. Keep a Taggit equipped while riding the balloon! Smash through the leaves on the right wall to expose the hidden flower.

Milde Habitat Walkthrough

Mildes are essentially living bubbles. Jumping on them triggers tiny explosions, giving you a boost. Tossing them into pools of water makes them rapidly multiply. Chaining bounces across these creatures is the key to surviving the volcanic pools.

Before diving too deep into tracking down every secret, you might be wondering about the total time commitment required for this adventure. Check out our full guide on how long it takes to beat Yoshi and the Mysterious Book to plan your playthrough.

Milde Mechanics Explained

  • Chain-bouncing across multiple Mildes is required to activate the central volcano chamber.
  • Always toss a Milde into a pool if you need a bridge; they will multiply and fill the gap.
  • Perform a ground pound on a Milde stuck in honey to trigger the “Honey filled!” Discovery.
  • Continuously pop Mildes on the surface of the lava to eventually summon a massive Mega Milde.

Milde Smiley Flowers

  • Flower 1: Smash the boxes sitting to the right of the pink pool to sneak under the volcano. Put a Milde on your back, bounce off another Milde on the right to reach the dried-out flower, and throw your carried Milde onto the pool to water it.
  • Flower 2: Escape the volcano by bouncing off the Mega Milde. Move left toward the sticky pink platform, then chain bounces across the Mildes to snag the flower floating at the top.
  • Flower 3: Head to the far right edge of the map. Throw a Milde onto the dark pool to activate it. Ground pound the resulting Mildes to launch yourself high enough to grab the flower in the upper right corner. Always carry a spare Milde on your back before tackling these pool puzzles so you don’t have to backtrack!

Peckadee Habitat Walkthrough

Peckadees feature sharp beaks that stick firmly into walls, rocks, and wood. They serve as your primary projectiles in this rocky nest area. You will throw them at targets and obstacles to forge new paths.

Peckadee Smiley Flowers

  • Flower 1: Maneuver a Peckadee so it falls inside the massive nut on the right side of the stage. Ground pound the stuck creature to crack the nut wide open.
  • Flower 2: Feed a hot pepper to a Peckadee, then launch the spicy bird at the giant boulder blocking your path on the upper left. Walk through the newly opened route to find the platform above.
  • Flower 3: Simply aim an egg precisely into the small hole in the wall to snatch this easy flower.
  • Flower 4: Starting from the area where you found Flower 2, use a Peckadee to access the upper right ledge. Halt the Peckadee running inside the wheel, then use its stuck beak as a stepping stone to climb up.

Floofly Habitat Walkthrough

Flooflies are fluffy, cloud-like entities that you can ride. Their colors dictate their behavior. Blue Flooflies bring the rain, yellow ones summon lightning, and gathering enough of them together builds a massive cloud ship.

Floofly Smiley Flowers

  • Flower 1: Right after stepping onto your very first Floofly, utilize the windmill tree’s spinning propellers to launch yourself to the upper Floofly clouds where the flower rests.
  • Flower 2: Once you land on the platform past the windmill tree, walk directly over the three Floofly clouds resting on the ground. This reveals a secret gap. Crawl inside to claim your prize.
  • Flower 3: While riding the Floofly boat, climb to the highest point of the ship as it passes precisely between the two hanging stalactites.
  • Flower 4: Stomp around on the blue rain Flooflies located on the boat. The rain will water the dried-out Smiley Flower sitting on the platform just before the end of the stage.
  • Flower 5: Near the very end of the habitat, make your way up to the Flooflies shaped like a fish. Flutter jump off this high cluster to reach the final flower. Stay elevated! If you drop down too early near the exit, you will completely miss the fish cluster.

Plumebrella Habitat Walkthrough

Think of Plumebrellas as organic paragliders. Grabbing hold of one lets you catch updrafts, glide across massive gaps, and chain float jumps by swapping from one Plumebrella to another in mid-air.

Plumebrella Smiley Flowers

  • Flower 1: Fire an egg directly into the upper right corner of the cave to expose an invisible Winged Cloud. Peg that cloud with a second egg to force it to drop the flower.
  • Flower 2: Snatch a Plumebrella and gently glide leftward over the water hazard to reach the floating flower.
  • Flower 3: Head into the cave situated just below the windmill tree next to the inverted Plumebrella. Swallow the Golden Plumebrella, turn it into an egg, and throw it to spawn a miniature gold variant. Use this tiny gold umbrella to float upward and flutter jump to the flower.
  • Flower 4: Grab the Golden Plumebrella and use it to dissipate the dark storm clouds gathered in the upper right sector of the map. The flower is hidden perfectly underneath.

Thudd Domain Walkthrough

Thudd is a colossal, slumbering giant that dominates this habitat. Thudd acts as a massive vacuum and cannon—inhaling water, enemies, and even Yoshi, only to spit them out at high velocities. Packing a whopping 7 Smiley Flowers, this is the longest and most demanding section of the chapter.

Waking the Behemoth

Thudd is fast asleep when you arrive. To get things moving, you need to execute a ground pound directly on its belly button. This triggers the Big Discovery and jolts the giant awake. Once active, Thudd will begin inhaling the surrounding environment. Position yourself carefully so you can be spit out toward your desired targets.

Thudd Smiley Flowers

  • Flower 1: Allow Thudd to inhale you, then aim your trajectory toward the ceiling on the upper left. You will land in a secluded room filled with Crazee Dayzees. One of them is holding the flower.
  • Flower 2: Have Thudd spit you toward the rocky outcrop in the left corner. Keep firing yourself at this exact same spot repeatedly to batter your way through to the flower at the end of the tunnel.
  • Flower 3: When you initially ground pound Thudd’s belly button while it sleeps, it will cough up this flower immediately.
  • Flower 4: Coax Thudd into inhaling the pond situated on the left side of the map. Aim the giant to spit that water directly onto the dried-out Smiley Flower located right next to where Thudd was sleeping.
  • Flower 5: Once Thudd stands up, head outside. Position yourself perfectly so Thudd launches you straight up into the small opening in the ceiling.
  • Flower 6: Toward the end of the map, trick Thudd into completely draining the massive pond. Jump down into the now-empty basin and creep into the secret passage tucked away in the lower right corner.
  • Flower 7: Walk entirely past the goal portal. Keep heading right until Thudd inhales you one last time. Launch yourself into the upper right alcove near the branches. Do not exit the level before grabbing this! Because it is located past the completion ring, you have to intentionally ignore the exit to find it.

Unmissable Discoveries for Easy Stars

You need Stars to keep unlocking chapters, and the Mountaintops area is swimming in easily missed Discoveries. Keep an eye out for these quick tasks:

  • Caught you! (Taggit): Just stand completely still near a Taggit and let it grab you.
  • Popped a mega Milde! (Milde): Pop enough Mildes on the lava to spawn the Mega variant, then hit it with a ground pound.
  • Target Practice (Peckadee): Successfully hit all five targets scattered across the habitat using Peckadees as darts.
  • The rain Floofly storm hid a rainbow! (Floofly): Run across the blue Flooflies that form an arc shape to paint a rainbow in the sky.
  • It even tried eating Kameki?! (Thudd): Lure Thudd close enough to Kameki to trigger this hilarious interaction.
  • Color Coordinator (Plumebrella): While gliding around with your Plumebrella, make sure you change the color of every single butterfly in the area.
